Gareth lived through the late shadow of an older conflict. When one violent incident sets crowds claiming to defend their own, he finds a terrified family hiding by the depot and recognizes a passenger from the route now under scrutiny. His whole struggle is a refusal to lie in either direction — to the mob, or to himself.
